While some stories depict Bunnell in a negative light for patenting the chair, Lee's great-great nephew noted in the Sun Community News story that Lee was already wealthy, so he wasn't interested in starting a chair-making business. Indeed, Lee was more focused on bottling and delivering mountain spring water from the Adirondacks.

Many times, lots of people like to think that the more expensive something is, the better the quality. While this does hold true to a certain extent, that is not always the case. In fact, even though this chair is certainly not the most expensive on the market, it does provide plenty of value for what it costs. For instance, this chair is one of the most durable on the market. This is mainly due to its high-quality hardware. The screws and bolts that hold this chair together are made with marine-grade steel, which means that you will never have to worry about them rusting out on you.
The popularity of this updated design spread, and because the chair originated in the Adirondacks, it was widely-known as the Adirondack chair. The exception is in Canada, where the chair is called the Muskoka chair, likely due to its popularity in the Muskoka region. .

The Adirondack chair gets its name from the Adirondack Mountain range in upstate New York. One legend speculates that the name was chosen for the chair because guests of a convalescent home for tuberculosis patients in the Adirondack Mountains enjoyed sitting in the chair to take in the therapeutic fresh mountain air.

We just gave away a patio set made of iron and all-weather (plastic) wicker. I would have preferred to repaint the iron and get new cushions made but my husband wanted a different look. Luckily a young and crafty couple were looking for a good project and took the whole whole set off our hands. I asked them to post pictures when they finish redoing them. Since living in my neighborhood we found that almost anything we no longer want or need can be reused by someone in a creative way. Had not idea that plastic could be successfully spray painted. Shorea: If aged wood in shades of gray and silver appeals to you, you need an Adirondack chair made of shorea. Some types of shorea start as light brown and slowly take on a soft gray if left unfinished. Shorea resists bugs and holds up well in tough weather conditions. Other wood: Less-common woods you may find include hemlock, acacia, and fir. Hemlock and acacia are hardwoods. Fir is a softwood that is occasionally used to make inexpensive Adirondack chairs. Maintenance is pretty practically non-existent! Just wash the chairs with soap and water, or a power wash if you have a power washer. Use a mild detergent to get off any persnickety stains.

But Lee and Bunnell’s slant-back chair endured. Permutations of the original design continued to appear, some from the workshops of weekend hobbyists, and others from the loftier circles of furniture designers like Gerrit Rietveld, whose 1918 “Red and Blue Chair” and boxy 1934 “Crate Chair” exhibit similar DNA. In 1938, Irving Wolpin of New Jersey patented a chair in the Westport form with a fan-shaped back and slats where Lee and Bunnell had used planks. It’s essentially the version we recognize today, and it appears throughout the Adirondacks, and even in Westport, where Lee’s design still holds court on some porches.
