So far I've bought a couple of pieces from Adirondack and the delivery folks are extremely friendly and careful when delivering furniture. They checked out multiple stairwells in my building to find the easiest to maneuver so that they wouldn't scratch any walls. .
I hope you love the products I've recommended below, just a heads up that as an Amazon associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. This means I may earn commissions on products bought via links on this page.
Biggest issue? If you are unable to use the stairs to enter and exit the store, then you are going to have to either pass up the chance to visit the showroom or see if they will allow you to enter via another means. The loading dock is not wheelchair accessible. This is a huge problem for persons with ambulatory concerns.
Another big positive for this chair is that it is made out of recycled plastics and comes in lots of different colors. This recycled plastic is good for the environment, and the different colors are great for making your décor flow with your outdoor entertaining area. This chair also has color-stay technology, which will keep the colors looking fresh and new for a good long time.
Pine: While pine takes more maintenance than teak, it is far more affordable. This light wood slowly fades to an attractive gray. As a softwood, it’s more susceptible to dings, scratches, and, unfortunately, bugs. You’ll need to refinish it every year or two to keep the wood looking its best and to help protect it from the weather. But if upkeep doesn’t worry you and you’re on a tight budget, pine is an excellent choice.
Now, while you might think that the lighter design of this chair will negatively affect the durability, that is not the case. In fact, the hardware that comes with this chair is exceptionally tough and weather resistant. This hardware is made out of 304-grade stainless steel, which is guaranteed not to rust, even if you leave the chair out in the weather.

Thanks for the info, Corey. I didn’t use primer either and I feel like I used quite a bit of paint. I tried to use a sweeping motion while spraying and I was worried about using too much, but since you mentioned using a thick coat, I guess I didn’t use too much (even though I used more than one can).
The Adirondack chair gets its name from the Adirondack Mountain range in upstate New York. One legend speculates that the name was chosen for the chair because guests of a convalescent home for tuberculosis patients in the Adirondack Mountains enjoyed sitting in the chair to take in the therapeutic fresh mountain air.
The chair Bunnell patented had the same wide armrests, plank back and angled seat as Lee’s invention. But it also included a tufted cushion, a drop-down footrest and what appears to be accommodations for a bedpan. He described it as “a chair of the bungalow type adapted for use on porches, lawns, and at camps, and also adapted to be converted into an invalid’s chair.”
Softwood is a cheaper option and very easy to physically manipulate with tools, so it shouldn’t be dismissed. You could use a selected few varieties of softwoods for Adirondack chairs.
For now, the first set actually looks great outside of our cabin in the Catskills. It’s still pretty chilly up there.
This is a very unique and beautiful chair as well as a neat replication of the historical chair made by Thomas Lee in 1903. Our Westport chair seat is made with five slat boards for better water drainage rather than using only two like the original historical chair. Our 9 1/4" inch wide arms and beautiful solid one piece back are made just like the original Westport. Available in Mahogany wood only.

You want all of your pieces to match as closely to the template as possible. And you may have cut a few pieces a little rough, or not exactly on the template so you will want to sand the edges smooth. To do this you can use a spindle sander. I admit that I started out clamping matching pieces together to attempt to sand them together. But I eventually gave up on that and sanded each piece one at a time, stopping periodically to compare them to one another. This is the oscillating spindle sander that I have HERE.
