There are two hallmark features that make an authentic wooden Adirondack chair according to experts; a three foot raked back and wide arms. This is why we build all of our original chairs with thick wide arms, roomy seats, tall 3 foot raked backs and thick sturdy legs. We use Mahogany, Red Western Cedar, and Ipe woods because each is durable as well as strong. To help withstand the elements of Mother Nature we use 316 stainless steel carriage bolts to attach our front legs and arms to the back brace board. We attach the seat and back slats with 316 stainless steel and powder coated wood screws for Ipe wood.

This chair has a very high capacity, as it can hold up to 400 lbs. It is also a bit thicker in its design on the seat and back, which makes it very durable. Surprisingly, however, even though this chair is thicker than its competitors, it is not all that heavy. In fact, this model only tips the scales at 37 pounds. This makes it light enough to move about with ease.

While cure chairs were specifically designed for TB sufferers, Catania notes that the frequency with which tuberculosis patients come in and out of remission blurred the line between who was ill and who was not. “There was this idea you had to take care of your health,” she says. “People slept out on their cure porches even if they weren’t sick with TB.” The Yale University Art Gallery obtained a Westport chair for its collection in 2002. It had already become fashionable for people of means to escape the stifling urbanization by fleeing northward to the mountains, where they could reconnect with nature through hunting, fishing and hiking. This led Marc Cook, a New York City office worker stricken with tuberculosis, to take to the mountains in a last-ditch effort to restore his health. He recovered, and shared his experience in an 1881 book titled The Wilderness Cure.

Environmental friendliness - Taking care of our environment is a big deal. Environmental scientists warn us to choose better materials and to find ways to remove plastics from the environment. The production of poly furniture takes over 210 million plastic jugs and bottles and recreates them into something families can enjoy for many years. Further, during production of poly wood, there are no harmful gases or chemicals released into the environment.
The only thing to bear in mind with this chair is that the arms have a tendency to flex if you put too much weight on them when you stand up. This can be completely avoided as long as you put your hands on the ends of the arms. If you accidentally hold the middle every once in a while, it won’t negatively affect the chair. If, however, you always place your hands in the middle of the arm, it could break down over time. RELATED: 7 Greatest Adirondack Chairs — Enjoy Style and Comfort Wherever You Need It!
