While much of the world is taken by this tiny living lifestyle, for us bigger people it’s not really a viable option. […]
The Swartzentruber family started Green Acres in 1988 as a side business in addition to their produce farming. The business was conducted April – July, three days a week, along Rt. 145 in Whitehall. .
Just bought four of these type of chair after doing a couple months of research into them (after seeing one for very cheap at Costco). Bought during the Memorial Day sale, buy 3 get one free, with free shipping. That sale seems to be over, but they still have a "special". They're not cheap, but are very comfortable, we like that the version we bought fold up nicely, and they have a relatively very long 20 yr residential warranty. We're expecting them to last for years.
In December of 2006, they purchased an additional property along Rt. 33 in Easton, PA, to meet the growing demand for their products, as well as facilitating significantly larger indoor and outdoor showroom. Since then they have continued to expand their indoor showroom and outdoor patio.
Assembly of these chairs is pretty simple and will take about 30 minutes if you use a power drill and are somewhat familiar with furniture assembly. The instructions are well made.
After settling on a design, he hired a local Westport Carpenter named Harry Bunnell to make a set of the chairs. Impressed by the design, Bunnell saw the commercial potential and began selling the chairs to Westport’s other visitors. Unfortunately, he… forgot… to ask Thomas Lee’s permission to sell the chairs. Bunnell filed for a patent on the design, and received one in 1905, despite not actually designing the chair. Bunnell sold the “Westport chairs”, made of Hemlock, for the next 20 years. Typically he would paint them green or brown, and he sold them directly to buyers.
While some stories depict Bunnell in a negative light for patenting the chair, Lee's great-great nephew noted in the Sun Community News story that Lee was already wealthy, so he wasn't interested in starting a chair-making business. Indeed, Lee was more focused on bottling and delivering mountain spring water from the Adirondacks.
On the bright side, working with it is such a breeze. It sands, cuts, planes, nails, glues, and screws without too much effort. It is also widely accessible in the US.

Update: we decided to order 3 more of these chairs for $229.00 amd we sat in it and now the plastic is hot or something and its bowing down amd the material feels really soft and flimsy. I will definitely be contacting the company or the seller for a partial refund. These are not worth $229.00 dont waste your hard earned money. 1.0 out of 5 stars 5/24/2020 update: cheap. By Saylor on January 26, 2020 I love this chair. It was easy to assemble and it's super comfortable. But when I ordered mine I paid $147.00 and then i went back to get the other three we need and they went up to $229.00. That's an $82.00 difference. That's crazy. What happened?!
Unfortunately, Trex’s chairs come in a more traditional color palette. Trex is one probably the biggest brand name in the poly resin material market and is one of our favorite outdoor furniture brands. They have been selling porch decking and flooring for decades.

The seat is another positive for this chair. While many Adirondack chairs have very low seats, this model sits at a comfortable height, which makes it much easier for folks to get in and out. The only real drawback to this otherwise excellent model is that the seat is not very wide. It is still wide enough to accommodate most people, but it might not be quite as roomy as they would like if they are on the larger side.
Last but not least is fir wood. We suggest going with the most popular one, the Douglas fir. It has long been used in building houses from floors to decks and even garden furniture.
