Much nicer, right? But it was like putting lipstick on a pig. Paint made them look pretty, but they were still wobbly and rickety. I think we got our money’s worth out of those crappy old Adirondack chairs and now its time for something a bit sturdier and better.

Being a softwood, cypress dents and scratches deeply and easily. It must be oiled and sealed with routine maintenance to enhance longevity outdoors. If you plan on making indoor Adirondack chairs, you can leave your cypress untreated.
The Furniture Barn USA Poly Lumber line of poly resin Adirondack chairs is quite nice and will last a lifetime. The cup holder may be a nice bonus for some, though we rather like the uninterrupted plane of the traditional Adirondack arm a little better, and typically those arms are wide enough to rest drinks upon. .

Oak is impervious to decay and is also termite resistant. There are two types of oak: red oak and white oak. Red oak is a porous wood and absorbs moisture quickly. It must be oil-sealed regularly.

Lots of small everyday household products, such as milk jugs, are made with HDPE. When you put those HDPE products in your recycling container, they’re often recycled into bigger everyday household products, such as trashcans, or — you guessed it — outdoor furniture. In the case of HDPE, the recycling process is sometimes referred to as “downcycling” because the original HDPE experiences some changes to its basic property types during the recycling process, and can’t be recycled a second time (when it’s in its outdoor furniture form).

Who knew you could spray paint outdoor plastic chairs and that about an hour of my time would result in loving them again? And the best part? …I’ve been dying to use these bright colors and finally had a perfect excuse! Seriously, this project was so simple. It took me about an hour (broken up into two 30 minute spray sessions) to do 6 chairs.

While cure chairs were specifically designed for TB sufferers, Catania notes that the frequency with which tuberculosis patients come in and out of remission blurred the line between who was ill and who was not. “There was this idea you had to take care of your health,” she says. “People slept out on their cure porches even if they weren’t sick with TB.” The Yale University Art Gallery obtained a Westport chair for its collection in 2002. It is made entirely out of 5/4 Western Red Cedar. The parts are held firmly in place using 1 3/4" stainless steel fasteners, and special, elasticized polyurethane adhesive, to keep the chair rigid, even when put through -40 to 120 degree temperature. We use Western Red Cedar as our feedstock. It is light, the resin is poisonous to insects, and the Species features an extremely high thermal factor. Western Red Cedar has 80% of the tensile strength of Oak, and is pound-for-pound stronger than steel! We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday! Local honey! Great for allergies! Western Red Cedar is also an appearance-grade wood. When properly coated with Sikkens Cetol, Tung Oil or quality stain, the grains stand out, providing high aesthetic appeal, and and long-lasting durability - even under severe conditions. It is not uncommon for a properly finished Adirondack Chair to last 100 years, there are many in existence to prove it. Naturally, these furniture pieces often become family heirlooms, and are handed down generations after generation, becoming sought after prizes for collectors. We have also made custom orders using other woods, such as mahogany, so let us know if you are looking for something different!

Love your idea and the color! Went out and bought the exact same color (satin lagoon). I scrubbed my 2 chairs with a brush and used the hose to rinse and let them dry for hours before painting. Ran out of paint before finishing my second chair. Had to wait about 2-3 weeks to finish a little bit of touch up on 1st chair (due to back problems). I waited at least 3 weeks before even thinking about sitting on it. I also kept it in the garage for several days to dry right after spraying it (so it wouldn’t get rained on). I used an old towel to dry off the raindrops and noticed blue paint! Now I’m afraid to let anyone sit on it. I didn’t use primer. Any suggestions?
