Who knew you could spray paint outdoor plastic chairs and that about an hour of my time would result in loving them again? And the best part? …I’ve been dying to use these bright colors and finally had a perfect excuse! Seriously, this project was so simple. It took me about an hour (broken up into two 30 minute spray sessions) to do 6 chairs.
The Highwood Hamilton is made of eco-friendly CPVC and features 304-grade stainless steel hardware for the fasteners. Even the dark colored chairs don’t get particularly hot in the prolonged sun. .
These units are of similar quality to the Polywood chairs but come in a more muted color palette. They do have one nice extra feature: they recline. The reclining feature comes at a higher cost, though, and when it comes down to it, we prefer the colors available on the Polywood line.
It is normal and expected to opt for wood readily available within your locality. However, it may not necessarily be ideal for Adirondack chairs.
Throughout Saranac Lake, enterprising residents rented homes out as “cure cottages” where tubercular city dwellers could take a chance on the cure. Boarding houses added “cure porches”—spacious, open-air balconies where patients could spend hours outdoors.
This part is time-consuming and messy considering how many pieces there really are for making Adirondack chairs. I ended up covered in sawdust, or as my 5-year-old calls is “wood fuzz”.
So why isn’t it the top pick? Well, it comes with its fair share of cons. It is overwhelmingly tough, much stronger than teak, so it is extremely difficult to work with.
"Teak comes with a high price tag because it’s in high demand for outdoor and indoor furniture. Its incredible durability makes it a worthwhile investment since you won’t need to replace it for years, and it can be left outside all year. "
Maintenance is key to keeping the original color and aesthetics of mahogany. It is a suitable luxury alternative to teak and close rivals when it comes to choice.
“I really think it was a marketing thing,” says Laura Rice, currently chief curator of the Adirondack Experience museum, which has both cure chairs and Westport chairs in its collection. “There were a lot of stores selling (cure furniture); that may have been his [Bunnell’s] intent.” She adds, however, that she’s never seen a chair with Bunnell’s modifications, and noted that the low profile of the Westport chair itself is not particularly suitable for someone in a weakened condition.
Rocking chairs: Adirondack rocking chairs have the same comfort and look of a traditional Adirondack chair except the legs are on rockers. If you enjoy the rhythmic comfort of a rocker, you may wish to consider an Adirondack rocking chair; it makes a great addition to a front or back porch.
What about vinyl lawn chairs. Still strong but look weathered any idea if I could paint these?

While most colors will only need to be cleaned a few times a year, colors like white, gray, or ivory and other lighter colors will need to be cleaned more often to maintain their original beauty. For the lighter colors, rub the furniture with a soft bristle brush and rinse off with warm, clean water. If needed, you can use a high-pressure washer; be sure to hold the nozzle more than 12″ away from the furniture when using the pressure washer.
Oak is impervious to decay and is also termite resistant. There are two types of oak: red oak and white oak. Red oak is a porous wood and absorbs moisture quickly. It must be oil-sealed regularly.
