Hi Gina. I just used a kitchen sponge with a rough side. Not all of the chalky stuff came off, but they were better than when I started. The paint did just fine without getting all of the chalky stuff off first. I have exactly the same chairs with the same horrible chalky residue on them. Did you have to remove the chalky substance before painting? I went to Home Depot to buy my paint (ironically Satin Lagoon and a Satin Eden). The guy there told me to use TSP and steel wool to scrub off the white chalky residue, then dry then paint 2 coats. So far I have only scrubbed 1 chair (I have 4 lol) and it was exhausting. Just wondering if you scrubbed that off first or am I wasting my time. My friends think I am crazy to waste so much time painting 17.00 chairs lol.

2) Portability and Size— From the other reviews I knew that these were not really portable even though they are called “folding”. I also knew that these weren’t the full size Adirondack chairs. However, I was surprised at how small they really are. My spouse is 6’5” so this is an issue. While he can sit in it, it is more uncomfortable for him. I should have gotten the full size even though it would have been more expensive.

Hi, I just wanted to send a quick note to let you know how much we love our chairs. We had to wait on the landscapers to finish up some brick work and the fire pit before we could set them up. We are very impressed with the quality and craftmanship of them.

Just make sure it is not too soft. Go for a species that is fairly strong, stable, and durable. You may also want to consider treating your wood for resistance to UV, water, weather, rot, and bugs.

Throughout the 19th century, the bacterial lung disease tuberculosis—known as “consumption” for the way it wasted, or consumed, its victims—had plagued America’s expanding cities. By the time the bacterium causing it was identified in 1882, it was responsible for 1 in 7 deaths worldwide. It was the leading killer in turn-of-the-century New York, where it claimed 9,630 lives in 1900, a rate of 280 per 100,000.

We just gave away a patio set made of iron and all-weather (plastic) wicker. I would have preferred to repaint the iron and get new cushions made but my husband wanted a different look. Luckily a young and crafty couple were looking for a good project and took the whole whole set off our hands. I asked them to post pictures when they finish redoing them. Since living in my neighborhood we found that almost anything we no longer want or need can be reused by someone in a creative way. Had not idea that plastic could be successfully spray painted. “I really think it was a marketing thing,” says Laura Rice, currently chief curator of the Adirondack Experience museum, which has both cure chairs and Westport chairs in its collection. “There were a lot of stores selling (cure furniture); that may have been his [Bunnell’s] intent.” She adds, however, that she’s never seen a chair with Bunnell’s modifications, and noted that the low profile of the Westport chair itself is not particularly suitable for someone in a weakened condition.
