I've also gone through a lot of these.....haven't found the solution myself other than to head to Home Depot to replace. They are very comfortable and durable, but don't last forever.
Durability - Because poly-wood is a derivative of plastics it does not have an issue with water damage like real wood furniture. It is not a porous material so it can withstand harsh weather conditions. Likewise, it is not susceptible to mold or mildew like wood and pests are not an issue. Wood-damaging pests like carpenter bees or termites don’t attack poly furniture. .
It’s a well-known fact that Amish craftsmen (and craftswomen!) have made beautiful, durable furniture for centuries. What you may not know is that now, using modern composite materials, this fine tradition of craftsmanship continues with our beautiful outdoor poly furniture, built in the popular and timeless Adirondack style and the English Garden collection.
Mine was doing chalky powder too I found out that it was too hot out and the mist when I was spraying was drying before touching the plastic. So I used a micro fiber cloth wipe off the plastic table I was doing and put another coat once it started to get dark out no chalky powder. I should have known. I’m doing the chairs tomorrow and was looking up how people have done chairs.

Made from Polystyrene materials this chair can hold 300 pounds. While in my opinion the finish of the chair itself is not as wood like as the Highwood chair. But it’s still one heavy duty Adirondack chair not to be messed with.

“Here’s this guy, he’s selling chairs to these city people coming up in Westport at the very same time that there is this large movement of hundreds of people going to the Adirondacks for their health,” Gilborn says. This, he says, “opened up a whole market for convalescent furniture” that Bunnell was eager to exploit.
